Maker vs taker fees in futures trading

Published 26 October 2026 · FuturesFees

Maker and taker describe how an order interacts with the order book. The label on the order form alone does not determine the fee.

Providing or taking liquidity

A maker fill adds liquidity by resting on the order book before execution. A taker fill immediately matches existing liquidity. A limit order that crosses the book can therefore be a taker fill. Check your actual fill record and account rates.

Compare the same position

For a 10,000 USDT position opened and closed at the same price, assume maker 0.020% and taker 0.050%, with no discounts, rebates or funding. These are illustrative rates, not a live account quote.

Lower commission is only one consideration

A resting order may not fill. Execution price, missed execution and slippage also matter. This comparison explains commission arithmetic; it does not recommend an order type or trading strategy.

Use the right rates on each side

In the calculator, select maker or taker separately for entry and exit. If your rates differ from a preset, choose custom rates. For orders with multiple fills, use quantity-weighted average prices and the applicable commission; mixed fees may need to be reconciled fill by fill.

Check formulas and actual account rates

These examples cover USDT-M linear perpetuals. Assumed rates are not live account rates. For full formulas, reference-review dates and Binance official sources, see the methodology and sources.
